Collaborative, targeted R&D
We have an enviable track record of successfully delivering R&D projects, focussing on domestic heating and electric load monitoring and control. While research is fundamental to our business, we don’t believe in research for its own sake; our aim is to transfer intellectual property to commercial products.
We optimise our success by working with experts, which is why we choose to collaborate with multiple research partners including University College London, the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (formerly DECC) and the Energy Technology Institute. Our research activities with these world-class research partners include designing, running and evaluating results from trials.
Case Study - Customer-led Network Revolution
The Customer-led Network Revolution wanted to monitor the home energy use of 1,200 customers. We recruited the customers, installed a solution to measure a broad range of energy uses, captured and analysed the data and ensured that customers were happy throughout the process and remained on the project.
We provided a turnkey solution for the test homes, which included our flagship monitoring and control system, PassivLiving. The system harvests domestic energy consumption data to measure usage patterns and the savings made through heat pumps and solar PV panels. The data provided vital insight into how people use energy at home.

Case Study - Scoping Study Oman
Across the Middle East, nation states face a growing financial burden to support increasing domestic energy consumption against a backdrop of heavily subsidised supply. The Authority for Electricity Regulation (AER) Oman is addressing the issue of energy efficiency in residential premises. This is not a simple task because the energy use at the residential level is driven by a complex interaction between the household’s demands for energy services, the building fabric and its systems. In recognition of this challenge, The AER contracted PassivSystems and the Energy Institute, University College London to carry out a 9-month scoping study on residential energy use
The project tested a range of energy saving interventions and pricing models in Omani homes and developed a domestic energy use model for policy analysis while securing Oman’s place as a region-leader in addressing domestic energy use.

Case Study - NOTICE Project, DECC SBRI funding
The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) awarded a grant to PassivSystems to develop a new heating platform that will lead to a reduction in energy demand, heat network operating costs and, ultimately, cut consumer heating bills. The PassivSystems-designed smart home heating platform was field tested in association with E.ON and WSP | Parsons Brinckerhoff.
Our solution was proven to reduce the running costs of the heat network by:
– reducing peak demand
– reducing return temperatures
– reducing end user heat demand (when not incompatible with the first two)
For new heat networks it also means reductions in capex as the network can be designed with knowledge of these measures in place. An important aspect of our solution is that it could in future provide quantitative knowledge and control of network demand, to give confidence to an operator that it is working within expected boundaries.
