The PassivEnergy Platform
Secure, scalable cloud-based home energy service platform
PassivEnergy is a secure, scalable, cloud-based IoT home energy services platform which puts you in complete control of the performance of your energy assets. PassivEnergy supports a range of applications with immediately deployable solutions for district heating, heat pumps, hot water, free-standing heating systems and rooftop solar PV. Investing in over 200 man-years of R&D and partnering on collaborative research has enabled us to develop the industry’s leading smart energy platform.
Our PassivEnergy platform combines our hosted services, in-home hubs and wirelessly connected devices. We have designed the system architecture to be scalable, responsive and incorporate robust data communications. To support this, as well as using established protocols like IP and GSM, we have adopted Sigfox, a next-generation machine-to-machine communications protocol for remote connected devices at low cost. For communications within the home we have embedded both Zigbee and Z wave chips in the PassivLiving Hub.
The cost, reliability and robustness of the communications layer enables intelligence in the home to be enhanced by intelligence in the cloud. We continuously invest in R&D and pursue an agile, continuous development process that minimises risk and ensures a fast response to our customers’ needs
Smart Built In
As part of our HEAT service, PassivEnergy’s learning algorithms analyse multiple data points within the home to learn the home’s thermal properties. We then overlay onto this weather information and users’ behaviour which allows us to predict the users’ demand. This data can then be used on a per home basis to optimise the efficiency of the individual’s system or aggregated to a multi home level which allows asset owners to optimise the efficiency of their heating plant.
As part of our SOLAR service we deploy sophisticated solar analytics that compares individual system performance with anticipated yields taking into account the weather, design parameters and performance of peer-group assets. Our detailed analytics drives performance reporting as well as alerting operators to underperformance or failures.
Our approach to data storage is hugely important to us at PassivSystems – ensuring that data is kept safe and secure is at the heart of what we do. The data we store is protected at multiple levels and we incorporate strong access controls so as to ensure that we have a highly secure storage network.
In terms of the volume of data we can store, our storage solution is cloud based and has been designed to be fully scalable and can store high volumes of sensor data – ideal for in depth analysis and project research.
APIs and enterprise integration
We have developed open, restful APIs to enable third party integration to our platform. This ensures that our customers can maximise the value they get from our platform by integrating it with their billing, Customer Relationship Management and other systems.
Our APIs have been fully versioned so as to allow components to be upgraded to support new features, and ensure backwards compatibility.
As part of the PassivEnergy platform we offer 2 key services; PassivLiving and PassivPro
If you are a manager of multiple assets our PassivPro portal enables you to easily provision and activate services, commission, manage and group homes, administer users, subscribe to alarms notifications and reports, and present graphical ‘dashboard’ views of home and portfolio performance.
To help the installer, we have developed a handy installation app which allows installers to recognise and register components by scanning QR codes and follow clear installation steps, including troubleshooting – helping to minimise installation times and ensure a successful installation first time round!
For end consumers, we offer a web portal and mobile app so that they can view and manage their home energy use. The PassivLiving App has been proven to help consumers use less, waste less and pay less for energy.
PassivLiving Hub & In-Home Control
Our PassivLiving Hub is an in-home appliance that manages a home area network of sensors, in-home displays and actuators. It hosts intelligent energy management applications to provide monitoring and control for the home.
The ‘always on’ server connection state enables remote connection for several tasks, including control by consumers’ smartphones, information delivery to the hub (for example, weather feeds), diagnostics and alerts, and smart grid demand management requests. We manage the hub from the PassivEnergy services platform and implement remote software updates without user intervention.
Securing data against hackers and fraud is key for both partners and end consumers. We incorporate multi-level security measures at every layer, across both hardware and software, including platform-wide authentication and encrypting data in flight.
A secure hub proxy ensures that only authorised users can connect to the hub, enabling secure communications to the home. Our tier-one managed hosting facility provides physical security, high levels of redundancy and guaranteed SLAs on uptime and fault fixing.
Open Climate Fix
Passiv is sharing data with Open Climate Fix to help address a major challenge in the UK energy sector around balancing the supply and demand of electricity in response to the increasing availability of renewable energy generation.
Smart hybrid heat pumps provide the UK’s pathway of choice to decarbonise heat
Lord Deben, chairman of the Committee on Climate Change (CCC) commenting on the potential for smart hybrid heat pumps in the CCC’s November 2018 report
Taking a hybrid approach to decarbonise domestic heating
Decarbonising heat is going to be challenging. Colin Calder, CEO of PassivSystems argues for an approach that utilises both electricity and gas on a domestic level to provide low carbon warmth.
Freedom: the key to carbon, comfort and cost in home heating
The Freedom Project is investigating the potential of multi-fuel, hybrid home heating systems to address the balance between energy security, social impact and environmental security to deliver comfort, carbon and cost.
Passiv saves Goldfield Partners thousands in Solar PV management and administration costs
The reduction in the Feed-in-Tariff has created numerous challenges for the Solar PV industry.
